Essentially self-taught, Steve Immel has been taking photographs for forty years. As a student of the mid-century masters there are important influences in his work. Among them are Edward Weston, Paul Strand, Margaret Bourke-White and Wynn Bullock. In the late 1960s he became a member of Friends of Photography and an exponent of the f.64 Group that prized clarity, depth of field and wide tonal range.
While his work is eclectic there is cohesion to its themes and points of view. Angles, textures and patterns have populated his photographs from the start. The play of light and shadow is reflected throughout his body of work. His work has become more abstract since 2000 and each frame is treated as a tiny design project where an elegant composition is the primary objective. This is especially true with his new Sketches of Winter series.
