“The outdoors and being in nature is my spiritual place; it’s where I go to reflect, gain insight, and inspiration. I am nature. I try to capture the essence of the outside and bring it inside, whether painting en plein air or in studio, I strive to give the viewer a sense of place. I want the audience to experience the cold air, the sunshine, and to feel as if they are standing in the middle of an open field.”
United States b. 1977 Abiquiu, New Mexico
Based in Espanola, NM, USA, Lucas Gonzales’ paintings are reflective of multiple genres including progressive concepts/abstraction and landscape painting. The styles depicted in his paintings are varied, including impressionism, painterly, and abstract. Lucas utilizes varied lines and textures to project movement that is eye-catching and ultimately draws the viewer to a distinct and exceptional focal point. His works are inspired by the natural world. Massive skies, clouds, mountains, animals, and plants make up many of his unique compositions. His works reveal unconventional techniques that are not constrained by the usual artistic boundaries.
Lucas is a self-taught artist that is dedicated to studying the works and techniques of other artists including Lynn Boggess, Anselm Kiefer, Fred Cuming, Pascale Rentsch, Chien Chung-Wei, and Marc Folly. He remains passionate about art and thoroughly enjoys the process of cultivating his own unique style, pushing the boundaries of contemporary painting. During childhood in rural northern NM, he was exposed to stunning New Mexico vistas, providing his landscape scenes with an uncanny sense of intimacy and familiarity. He takes pride in carrying on the artistic legacy of his descendants who’ve been making art in the region for multiple generations.
