J. R. “Jim” Coffman is an Eastern Kansas native and a veterinarian. Always heavily involved with horses and other animals many of his paintings include figures and animals. Coffman drew from an early age and began painting, when time allowed, in the mid-1970’s. Following retirement he began painting seriously. For the first time he painted nearly every day and took lessons, primarily in the open studio environment of Taos, NM, artist Richard Alan Nichols. He also benefitted from informal instruction and mentoring from other artists including prairie artist, Oscar Larmar. Painting with other artists both in studio and plein air environments has been an important part of developing technique and a personal style.
Coffman and his wife, Sharon, live several months each year in Taos. He has exhibited in Taos, including in the Blumenschein Museum and the Taos Fall Arts Festival and in other venues with the Taos Plein Air Society. In Kansas he has exhibited in Strecker- Nelson and Strecker Nelson West Galleries and the Manhattan Arts Center in Manhattan and Leawood Fine Arts Gallery in Leawood, Ks. His paintings focus on the Kansas Flint Hills and northeastern New Mexico.
Coffman paints primarily in oil and occasionally in acrylic and pastel. Much of his landscape work, especially in the Flint Hills, is done with palette knife.
Coffman is a member of the Taos Artist Organization, the Taos Plein Air Society and the Columbian Artist Group.
